How to configure Windows Defender and KnowIT

For KnowIT to install and operate correctly it is required to add it as an exclusion to your installed antivirus software. To do that, follow these steps.

Windows Defender is the name of antivirus software built in to Windows 8 and Windows 10.  If you are running Windows 7 or older it will be known as Microsoft Security Essentials.

Please see our Security Essentials guide for how to configure that with KnowIT.

Step 1 - Open up Windows Defender

Click the Start button and type in Windows Defender and it will be listed.  Click it once you see it to open up the program.

Step 2 - Add the KnowIT folder to the exclusion list

With Windows Defender open, click Settings.

Scroll down to Exclusions and click Add an Exclusion.

Under Folders, click the + button.

In the dialog box that appears browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Shell\

Click Exclude This Folder.

If you do not see this folder make sure you have enabled the viewing of hidden files.

To do this, open up Windows Explorer and do the following:

  1. Click File.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click View.
  4. Under Hidden Files and Folders make sure Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives is selected.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click OK.

You should now see the Windows Shell folder.

Step 3 - Add the KnowIT running process to the exclusion list

In the same menu above, under File Types, click the + button.

Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Shell and click the ws_process_monitor_service.exe file.

Click Exclude this file.

Remember to now hide Windows Shell folder again.

To do this, open up Windows Explorer and do the following:

  1. Click File.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Click View.
  4. Under Hidden Files and Folders make sure Don't Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives is selected.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click OK.

The Windows Shell folder will now be hidden.

Important Disclaimer

Your specific antivirus product may differ slightly from our examples. The exact steps needed may vary on your computer but the basic idea is the same.

Although we provide this information as a convenience, Digital Endpoint has no control over an antivirus product’s detection, quarantine or removal process. If our guides are not helpful in your specific case, we recommend contacting your antivirus product support for additional help on creating software exclusions and general product functionality.

Windows Defender users should understand that Windows Defender may flag PC monitoring programs such as KnowIT with a varying alert level, or as "Potentially Unwanted Software".  This is simply due to the variety of data KnowIT is logging in the background (keystrokes, websites, etc.).

Exclusion of KnowIT file scanning may be handled immediately if such notices appear during installation (see the above sections for exact filenames).
