Installing KnowIT on to a non-rooted Android device
Before You Start
Before proceeding to install KnowIT, you must 'Disable Security Settings'
- Open Play Store and tap the Profile icon
- Tap Play Protect
- Tap Settings at the top right
- Turn OFF the below options
- Scan apps with Play Protect
- Improve harmful app detection
Installing the Software
Step 1 - Enable Unknown Sources
- For Android OS 9 and above, go to Settings, search for Special app access > Tap Special app access > Tap on Install unknown apps > Select browser that you will be using for download software. For example: if you are using Chrome for download, tap Chrome and enable Allow from this source.
- For Android OS 8, go to Settings, search for Install unknown apps and tap on the browser that you will be using for download software. For example: if you are using Chrome for download, tap Chrome and enable Allow from this source.
Step 2 - Download KnowIT
- From the main menu in your account, click Tools, then click Install Device Software and choose Android.
- Open the download URL on your Android device.
Step 3 - Start the KnowIT installation
- Swipe from the top of the screen down and tap on the file to run the installation after the download completes.
Step 4 - Open KnowIT and grant application permissions
- You will be asked to grant a series of permissions. Tap “Allow” on all prompts and grant all permissions that KnowIT needs for tracking your device activity.
- For “Location” permission, Tap “Allow in settings” and Tick “Allow all the time”
- For Android OS 15 Only - For SMS permission, a “App was denied access to SMS” pop-up will appear, Tap OK
Important Note: For SMS capturing to function you'll need to enable 'Large keyboard text' which we will do later in the guide (Step 9)
Step 5 - Activate Device Admin
Step 6 - Allow KnowIT to run in the background
Step 7 - Activate KnowIT
- Type in your nowIT license code which is listed inside your KnowIT portal and tap Activate to activate the product.
Step 8 - Show or hide the KnowIT icon
- Once you have activated KnowIT successfully you can tap Yes to hide the KnowIT icon or tap No to keep it visible.
Step 9 - Enabling KnowIT helper service
Some activity tracker rely on a separate helper service to be active alongside the main KnowIT application.
Where possible, KnowIT will enable this itself, however on some phone models it must be done manually.
Enable 'Large keyboard text'
- For Android OS 13 and above
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > tap Large keyboard text > in the Restricted Settings pop-up, tap Ok
- Go to Settings > Apps > find then tap 'KnowIT' > tap the three vertical dots on the corner of the screen > Allow restricted settings > Confirm
- Next, Go to Settings > Accessibility > under Downloaded Apps tap Large keyboard text > Toggle Use Large keyboard text to ON > Tap Allow
- For Android OS 12 and below
- Open Settings
- Select Accessibility (this may be under "Smart Assistance")
- Scroll to "Downloaded/Installed Services"
- Enable "Large keyboard text" service
Step 10 - Grant SMS Permission
- For Android OS 15 Only - Go to Settings > Apps > KnowIT > Tap Permissions > Scroll down and tap SMS and tap on "Allow"
Step 11 - Enabling VoIP Call Recording
To record VoIP Calls on Android OS 10 and Above, please do the following.
- Ensure Notifications for your desired applications are turned ON.
- Go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > See all
- For each app (WhatsApp, Skype, FB Messenger, Line, Viber, Hangouts) ensure notification is turned ON
- Grant Special Access to KnowIT
- For Android OS 15
- Go to Settings > search for 'Special app access' > tap 'Special app access' > Tap 'Notifications read, reply & control' > KnowIT > Allow notification access.
- For Android OS 12 -14
- Go to Settings > search for 'Special app access' > tap 'Special app access' > Tap 'Device & app notifications' > KnowIT > Allow notification access.
- For Android OS 10-11
- Go to Settings > search for 'Special app access' > Tap 'Special app access' > Tap 'Notification access' > KnowIT > Turn ON
Step 12 - Enabling Application Life Cycle
To capture the Application Life Cycle feature, please do the following.
- Open Settings > Apps > tap the 3 dots > Special access > Usage data access > 'KnowIT' > Allow usage tracking > Turn ON
