Antivirus File Exclusions for Desktop Monitoring

Antivirus File Exclusions for Desktop Monitoring

If you are running antivirus software on the Target PC or Mac, you'll need to temporarily turn off it's resident shield and file scanning functions before installing KnowIT.

After installation is completed, you can then add the software folders and files to the antivirus' White List, Trusted List, or file and folder Exclusion list to avoid interference in the future. Then you may turn your antivirus protection back on. If your AV app supports it you will also need to whitelist a unique URL that KnowIT uses for dynamic updates.

Specific instructions may differ for a variety of antivirus packages, although the basic process is the same. Most antivirus shortcut options allow temporarily disabling protection, then adding a set of folders or files to be "trusted" or excluded from future scanning.

For Windows PC

In Windows, KnowIT installs into hidden folders.
Add these paths to your exclusion list
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Shell\*
C:\Program Files\Windows Shell\*
*\AppData\Roaming\Windows Shell\*
*\main_installer.exe
*\update_client.exe
*\ws_process_monitor_service.exe
These are pathnames to the files and folders and the URL you must add to the trusted list, to ignore or exclude from future scanning in your antivirus program. A wildcard *.* at the end of a path tells your A/V app to include all files or folders underneath. A wildcard at the beginning denotes any pre-pending path these files may be found. Your A/V software may have its own way of indicating wildcard paths.

Additionally, if your antivirus software supports domain whitelisting, you should add the download domain to ensure software updates aren't unintentionally blocked.

After KnowIT installation is complete and the antivirus is set to ignore all files in these folders, you may re-enable your antivirus protection.

Note that you may need to temporarily allow viewing of hidden folders in Windows File Explorer, to manually select the folders from inside the antivirus app.

Some versions of Windows may differ in this process. In Windows 10, open Start Menu > File Explorer > View > Options > Change Folder and Search Options > View > then select Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives > OK.

*For wildcard prepended paths it may be easier to type the location manually.

For Macintosh

In Mac OS X, KnowIT installs into four hidden folders that each need to be trusted, ignored or excluded from future scanning in your antivirus program.

Add these paths to your exclusion list

/usr/libexec/SystemFirewalls/*
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/*
/Library/LaunchAgents/*
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/.blbla/*
Additionally, if your antivirus software supports domain whitelisting, you should add the download domain to ensure software updates aren't unintentionally blocked.

After completing the KnowIT installation, setting up antivirus to ignore all files in these folders and whitelisting the URL, you may re-enable your antivirus protection.

*Note that you may need to temporarily allow viewing of hidden folders, to select these folders from the antivirus app.

Instructions for configuring the Exception list in specific antivirus packages

*Some antivirus apps may not support URL whitelisting. This is not always required, though you may refer to your antivirus support if needed.
